Let both flavours stay noticeable

Banana can dominate quickly. One medium-to-large peeled fruit is enough for two servings when chocolate should remain noticeable. Weighing prevents an unusually large banana quietly changing the balance.

Vanilla ice cream keeps this version gentle and lets cocoa supply the chocolate. Chocolate ice cream can replace it for a darker version, but taste before using the full cocoa quantity because some tubs are already intense.

Give cocoa a head start

Dry cocoa added to a thick frozen mixture can leave dark patches around the jug. Making a paste lets the powder disperse before meeting banana and ice cream. The extra minute avoids chasing dry specks through a finished shake.

Fresh banana is easiest for a modest blender. Frozen coins make a thicker drink if the appliance supports them, but can stop circulation. Let them soften slightly and add milk by the tablespoon only when necessary.

Serve before the fruit changes

Banana flavour changes after blending and the drink may darken or separate in the fridge. Cocoa hides the colour change but does not stop it; dark colour is not a freshness check.

A few chocolate shavings are an optional finish. Large chunks add chewing rather than smoothness, so keep them separate if you want the drink to flow through a straw. Banana already provides plenty of body without additional ice.

What you'll need

  • 1 ripe banana, about 120 g peeled
  • 240 g vanilla ice cream
  • 180 ml cold milk, divided
  • 2 tsp unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 tsp maple syrup, optional

Let's make it

  1. Mix cocoa with a tablespoon of measured milk to make a paste. Loosen with another tablespoon.
  2. Blend remaining milk, sliced banana and cocoa paste until smooth.
  3. Add scoopable ice cream and pulse just until combined. Taste before adding optional syrup.
  4. Pour into two glasses and serve. Rinse the cocoa bowl promptly before the paste dries.

Make it your own

A small pinch of cinnamon gives a warmer aroma.

Use dairy-free vanilla dessert and a plant drink for a plant-based variation; the thickness will differ.

Keeping it fresh

Serve immediately. Refrigerate an untouched portion promptly, covered, and use later the same day. Follow the shortest ingredient use-by date.
