Measure after stirring

Natural peanut butter can separate into oil above a firm peanut layer. Scooping from an unstirred jar changes the recipe because you may add more oil and less peanut than expected. Stir thoroughly before weighing.

Forty grams gives a clear peanut flavour without turning two drinks into dense paste. More is not automatically better: peanut butter thickens the mixture and clings to the jug, so increasing it normally requires an adjustment to milk.

Balance sweet and savoury

Peanut butter may already contain sugar and salt. Taste the finished base while cold before adding either. A spoonful straight from the jar tastes different from the same spread diluted through milk and ice cream.

Crunchy peanut butter leaves fragments that can settle or block a straw. For a controlled crunchy finish, keep the base smooth and serve chopped peanuts separately, only when suitable for everyone eating.

Think about shared equipment

Peanut residue can remain around lid seals and removable parts. A quick rinse is not a reliable way to remove the allergen when someone else avoids peanuts. Follow the appliance's cleaning instructions and the person's established allergy precautions.

Loosening the spread with milk before blending is the useful small step here: it reduces sticky clumps without requiring a long, warming blend.

What you'll need

  • 250 g vanilla ice cream
  • 200 ml cold milk
  • 40 g smooth peanut butter
  • 1 tsp maple syrup, optional
  • Tiny pinch of salt, only if needed

Let's make it

  1. Stir the peanut butter in its jar if oil has separated. Mix 40 g with two tablespoons of the measured milk until loosened.
  2. Blend remaining milk with the peanut butter mixture to remove streaks.
  3. Add scoopable ice cream and pulse until even. Stop and unplug before scraping the jug if needed.
  4. Taste before adding optional syrup or salt. Divide between two glasses and serve.

Make it your own

Almond butter changes flavour and introduces another nut allergen; it is not an allergy-safe substitute.

For a peanut-free drink choose ingredients suited to the individual's needs rather than assuming another spread is safe.

Keeping it fresh

Serve fresh. Refrigerate an untouched remainder promptly, covered, and use within 24 hours. Stir well because separation is possible.

Allergen notes

Contains peanuts and milk. Check ice cream for egg and consider cross-contact on shared equipment.
